Emergency Preparation
prepared by the Jefferson County Department of Emergency Preparation
Radio Training - tentatively on May 30 details to be announced
We are a group of neighbors who have joined together to be able to respond more effectively in case of an emergency or a disaster such as an earthquake. We are using the Map Your Neighborhood program for community preparedness and we are coordinating with Jefferson County’s Department of Emergency Management, so that in the event of a disaster, they can do a better job of helping all of us.
By joining our group, you’ll get valuable information and tips on how to be prepared, so that you can be safer and more secure in your home, regardless of whether you own or rent. Plus, you’ll get to know your neighbors as we learn and have fun together at our community gatherings.
If you live in our community, (see on a map) whether you own or rent your home, we invite you to join us! Join now
We live in a seismic zone. Major earthquakes do happen here, every couple of hundred years, and the next one could occur at any time. We are on a peninsula on the end of another peninsula, accessed by only a few roads. If a quake damages those roads, help and supplies could be weeks or even months reaching us. Being adequately prepared will make it more likely that you could stay safely in your home after a quake. And if you have children or pets, you’ll can feel more confident, knowing that your neighbors will also be looking out for them.
Here's a couple of good articles from the New Yorker that will scare you and, we hope, help you take emergency preparation seriously:
